Jorge Luis Borges seemed just another obscure Argentinian man of letters until he won the inaugural Formentor prix international (shared with Samuel Beckett) in 1961. A subsequent flood of translations into English and other languages made him world-famous, particularly for the short stories included in Ficciones (1944) and El Aleph (1949). He is, however, almost equally celebrated for his luminous poems and essays.
‘El jardín de senderos que se bifurcan’ [The Garden of Forking Paths] (1941), from his first booklet of stories, was also the first of his ‘fictions’ to be translated into English. It appeared in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in August 1948.
