Tzvetan Todorov was a Bulgarian-French historian, philosopher, structuralist literary critic, sociologist and essayist. He was the author of many books and essays, which have had a major influence on disciplines as diverse as anthropology, sociology, semiotics, literary theory, and cultural theory. He died in Paris on February 7, 2017.

His groundbreaking essay Introduction à la littérature fantastique (1970) was translated into English by Richard Howard as The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre in 1973.
